New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted activist Mahmoud Khalil and his family for an iftar dinner at Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence, drawing both praise from supporters and sharp criticism from opponents over Khalil’s past activism and legal battles. On March 9, Mayor Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, welcomed Khalil, his wife Noor, and their young son, Deen, to break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Mamdani shared a photograph of the gathering on social media, celebrating together at the historic residence.

The dinner coincided with the one‑year anniversary of Khalil’s detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which had held him as part of an immigration case tied to allegations of fraud on his green card application and labeled his activism as potentially conflicting with U.S. foreign policy interests. Mahmoud Khalil is a Palestinian‑Algerian activist and former graduate student at Columbia University best known for his leadership role in the 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampment protests and his subsequent detention by ICE in March 2025. Critics, including the Trump administration, argued his activism and comments including characterizations of the October 7 attack by Hamas as “desperate posed national security concerns. Khalil and his supporters have maintained his actions were centred on free speech and human rights advocacy.

The decision by Mamdani to host Khalil has been met with intense debate:

Critics, including organisations such as the Republican Jewish Coalition and local leaders, condemned the mayor for entertaining an activist they say has made controversial remarks about violence against Israelis, arguing such a reception at the official mayor’s residence was inappropriate.

The event also reignited broader discussions on immigration policy, national security, and political activism in the United States especially as local, federal, and international tensions remain high regarding Middle East conflicts. Khalil’s detention and legal status have been the subject of prolonged litigation. After being held in Louisiana, a federal panel in New Jersey ruled he should be allowed to continue his immigration process, but deportation efforts and appeals remain underway. His case has drawn attention from civil liberties groups, lawmakers, and human rights advocates who argue it highlights challenges in balancing immigration enforcement with constitutional free‑speech protections.
