Designed for a roughly two‑year mission, the probes continued to send valuable scientific data for nearly seven years before being deactivated in 2019 after running out of fuel. The mission yielded critical insights into how charged particles behave around Earth, including measurements that helped scientists understand space weather and its effects on satellites, astronauts and ground‑based technology. Initial forecasts had predicted that the spacecraft would remain in orbit until the 2030s, but heightened solar activity during the current solar cycle increased atmospheric drag and hastened the probe’s descent back to Earth. According to NASA’s update, re‑entry occurred at approximately 6:37 a.m. EDT on 11 March. Most of the roughly 600‑kilogram (1,323‑pound) satellite burned up as it plunged through the atmosphere, but the Space Force noted some dense components may have survived and impacted the surface. NASA has assessed the likelihood of debris causing harm to people on the ground as very low about 1 in 4,200 due to the spacecraft’s expected breakup and the fact that most of Earth is covered by oceans and unpopulated areas. The probe’s twin, Van Allen Probe B, remains in orbit but non‑operational and is not expected to re‑enter before 2030. The Van Allen Probes mission was the first to spend extended time traversing Earth’s radiation belts, a region routinely avoided by most spacecraft due to high levels of energetic particles that can damage electronics and pose risks to astronauts.
