Israel’s Contestant At The Eurovision Song Contest Has Said He Was Surprised

Israel’s contestant at the Eurovision Song Contest has said he was surprised by protests that disrupted his semi-final performance, as the competition continues to be overshadowed by political tensions linked to the war in Gaza. The Israeli entry, Noam Bettan, was performing his song “Michelle” at the semi-final stage in Vienna when a small number of protesters and audience members interrupted the show with boos and chants including “stop the genocide” and “free Palestine.” The disruption was picked up by microphones and briefly audible to television viewers. Despite the disturbances, Bettan completed his performance and later qualified for the grand final after receiving enough public votes. He described the reaction as unexpected, saying he had prepared for possible backlash but was still taken aback by the intensity of the protests during the live broadcast. Reports from the venue suggested that while a small group of protesters attempted to disrupt the performance, the majority of the audience remained supportive, with both cheers and boos heard during the act. Security officials also removed several individuals involved in disruptive behaviour. This year’s Eurovision has been marked by controversy over Israel’s participation, with several countries boycotting the contest in protest at the war in Gaza, and demonstrations taking place in and around the host city. The European Broadcasting Union EBU, which organises the contest, has maintained that Eurovision should remain politically neutral, but the issue has increasingly influenced performances, audience reactions and international coverage. Bettan is now set to compete in the final, where security and political tensions are expected to remain high alongside the musical competition.
