Inmate Escapes from Maximum-Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri The Nigeria Correctional Service NCoS, Borno State Command, has announced the escape of an inmate from the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri. The escapee was identified as 22-year-old John Israel, although his name appears as “JOHN ISEARL” on his inmate uniform. The NCoS said he is from Ado in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The command has appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide any credible information that could assist security agencies in locating the fugitive. Authorities specifically warned members of the public not to attempt to apprehend him themselves. Instead, anyone with information about his whereabouts or anyone reasonably suspected to be the escapee should immediately contact the nearest police station, correctional facility or other security agency. The incident comes nearly two years after severe flooding in Maiduguri caused the walls of correctional facilities to collapse, resulting in the escape of hundreds of inmates. The NCoS has since undertaken efforts to strengthen the city’s correctional infrastructure. An inmate escaping from a maximum-security facility raises immediate public-safety concerns and places pressure on correctional and security authorities to quickly locate and return the fugitive to custody.

The NCoS has confirmed the escape of John Israel from Maiduguri’s Maximum-Security Custodial Centre and is appealing for public assistance in locating him while warning people not to attempt a direct arrest.
