INEC Projects Over 100 Million Registered Voters for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has projected that Nigeria’s registered voter population will surpass 100 million ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a joint implementation meeting involving the Commission’s voter education, publicity, gender and inclusivity departments. Nigeria currently has about 93 million registered voters, meaning the projected figure would represent a significant increase and potentially give the country the largest voter population in Africa.Haruna said the expected growth in the electorate makes it necessary for INEC to strengthen its voter education and public communication strategies ahead of the 2027 elections. The Commission said the meeting was aimed at developing a communication and inclusivity roadmap to ensure the elections are free, fair, credible, peaceful and inclusive. INEC has also stressed the importance of ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is excluded from participating in the electoral process.

The latest projection follows the conclusion of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which generated millions of new registrations. INEC previously reported more than 10.3 million completed registrations across the three phases of the exercise, although the final voter register remains subject to verification and other processes. For context, Nigeria had 84 million registered voters in 2019 and 93.47 million ahead of the 2023 general elections, showing a steady expansion of the electoral register. With the 2027 elections approaching, the projected 100-million-plus electorate will place additional demands on INEC’s logistics, voter education, technology and election-security preparations.
