INEC presents Certificates of Return to winners of June 20 bye elections The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has presented Certificates of Return to candidates who emerged victorious in the bye-elections conducted on June 20, 2026, across Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo and Kano states, formally affirming their election into the vacant legislative seats. The certificates were presented on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, by the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, May Agbamuche-Mbu, during a ceremony held in Abuja. Speaking at the event, Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated the winners and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by their constituents through effective representation and dedicated service. She emphasized that the foremost responsibility of elected officials is to represent the interests of the people who voted them into office. The bye-elections were conducted to fill vacancies in the Senate and House of Representatives, including seats in the Rivers South-East, Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Ondo South Senatorial Districts, as well as the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State. INEC also disclosed that separate ceremonies would be held for the presentation of Certificates of Return to the winner of the Zuru State Constituency bye-election in Kebbi State and the governor-elect from the recent Ekiti State governorship election. The electoral commission noted that the presentation of the certificates officially recognises the beneficiaries as duly elected representatives, enabling them to proceed with the necessary legislative and constitutional processes associated with assuming office. The June 20 polls were among several elections organised by INEC to fill vacant positions created by deaths, appointments and other developments that resulted in unoccupied legislative seats across the country.
