INEC Ends Nationwide Voter Registration Amid Concerns Over 2027 Election Readiness The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has concluded its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration CVR exercise despite calls from opposition political parties and civil society organisations for an extension, citing concerns over technical glitches, access challenges and preparations for the 2027 general elections. INEC maintained that the registration exercise ended as scheduled, insisting the timeline complies with the Electoral Act 2022, which requires voter registration to close ahead of elections to allow for data verification, cleanup of the voters’ register, production of Permanent Voter Cards PVCs and other logistical preparations.However, several stakeholders expressed concern that technical problems on the online registration portal, delays at registration centres and limited access in some areas may have prevented many eligible Nigerians from registering. Civil society groups warned that these challenges could affect voter participation and public confidence in the credibility of the 2027 elections. Opposition parties were divided over the commission’s decision. While some urged INEC to extend the registration period to accommodate more prospective voters, others argued that Nigeria should adopt a more flexible voter registration system that allows eligible citizens to register continuously rather than within fixed windows. Election stakeholders also emphasized the need for INEC to strengthen public trust by ensuring transparent management of the voters’ register, improving access to registration services and addressing operational challenges before the 2027 polls. They argued that resolving technical issues and expanding voter access would help reinforce the credibility of future elections. Separately, reports emerged of security concerns during the exercise, including the disruption of PVC distribution at a registration centre in Osun State, where gunmen reportedly carted away voter cards. The incident has added to calls for stronger security measures to safeguard electoral materials and processes ahead of future elections.
