Officials say the agents are being used to support operations such as crowd control, monitoring entry and exit points, and easing pressure on existing staff. Authorities have stressed that ICE agents are not replacing TSA officers and are not carrying out specialised security screening, such as checking luggage or operating scanners, because they lack the required training.
Instead, their presence is intended to allow trained TSA personnel to focus on core security duties. Despite the deployment, many airports have continued to experience long waiting times, with some passengers reporting delays of several hours and missed flights. Airports have advised travellers to arrive much earlier than usual, in some cases up to four hours before departure.
The decision has sparked criticism from unions, lawmakers and civil liberties groups, who argue that ICE agents are not trained for airport security roles and could increase tension among travellers.
Some critics have also expressed concern that the presence of immigration enforcement officers in airports could lead to fear among migrant communities, even though officials say the deployment is not focused on immigration arrests.
The move has also highlighted broader political disagreements in Washington over immigration policy and government funding, which remain unresolved. ICE is a federal law enforcement agency responsible for immigration enforcement and border-related investigations. It operates under the Department of Homeland Security, alongside the TSA. The current situation underscores the wider impact of the ongoing funding dispute, with airport operations becoming one of the most visible signs of disruption.
