Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Approves N32bn Gratuity Payments, Releases N5bn Tranche to Reduce Backlog Owed to Retirees and Families Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved a significant payment of N32 billion to settle outstanding gratuities and death benefits owed to retired civil servants and families of deceased workers in the state. This latest disbursement includes N5 billion released as the sixth tranche, part of ongoing efforts to clear long‑standing backlog inherited from previous administrations. Governor Yusuf flagged off the sixth tranche of N5 billion at the Government House, bringing total payments to N32 billion out of a N48 billion backlog the administration inherited upon assuming office. The governor noted that N27 billion had already been paid in five earlier tranches before the current release. The move underscores the administration’s intent to permanently resolve the long‑standing issue of unpaid gratuities and death benefits to pensioners and bereaved families within his first term in office. Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their cooperation and patience throughout the payment process. He also encouraged beneficiaries to use the funds prudently to improve their welfare.
Officials including the Head of the Kano State Civil Service and the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Pension Fund Trustees commended the governor’s commitment to clearing the backlog and providing relief to retirees and families who have waited years for their entitlements. The backlog of unpaid gratuities and death benefits had been a persistent source of hardship for many retirees and family members, some of whom had waited years for their dues. The sustained efforts by the Kano State government aim to restore trust in governance and fulfil campaign promises related to civil service welfare.
