Five Dead, 11 Injured in Two Kano Building Collapses

At least five people have died and 11 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following the collapse of two buildings under construction in Kano State, the Kano State Fire Service has confirmed. The two incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and along Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area.

According to the Fire Service, one of the collapsed structures trapped six construction workers. Four victims were rescued unconscious and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead by doctors. The deceased were identified as Sunusi Siraju, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim, 26; and Abubakar, 30. In a separate incident, an Islamiyya school building collapsed after a distress call was received at about 2:40 p.m. Eight students were rescued alive, while another was pulled out unconscious but later died. The deceased was identified as 14-year old Khadija Muhammad. Three of the survivors were identified as Hassana Issa, Usaina Issa and Zuleyhat M. Gambu, all aged 13.

The Fire Service said the exact cause of the collapses had not yet been established, but preliminary investigations are expected to shed light on what led to the tragedies. The agency urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to observe safety precautions and comply with approved building standards to prevent further loss of lives. The incidents have once again raised concerns over construction safety and compliance with building regulations, particularly as building collapses continue to claim lives across Nigeria.
