FIFA Sanctions Argentina After World Cup Final Fracas

FIFA has imposed a series of disciplinary sanctions on Argentina following incidents during and after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a $321,000 fine on the Argentine Football Association (AFA). The most severe punishment went to midfielder Leandro Paredes, who has been handed a 10-match international suspension and a $90,000 fine for his role in the confrontation that followed Argentina’s defeat by Spain in the World Cup final. Paredes was found responsible for three assault offences after pushing Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground as tensions erupted at the final whistle. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was also punished with a seven-match ban and a $90,000 fine. Other sanctions include a one-match suspension and $30,000 fine for Thiago Almada, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala received a three-match ban and a $30,000 fine. Gavi was also handed a one-match suspension and fined $30,000 for unsporting behaviour. The AFA’s $321,000 fine relates to several disciplinary breaches recorded during the tournament. Among the issues was the display of a political banner concerning the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) following Argentina’s semi-final victory over England. FIFA also cited discriminatory behaviour, security breaches and other incidents involving Argentina’s team and supporters. As part of the punishment, Argentina must play its next two home matches with stadium capacity restricted to 50 per cent. FIFA has also directed that $100,000 of the AFA’s fine be invested in anti-discrimination initiatives. The sanctions follow FIFA’s disciplinary investigation into the incidents at the World Cup and can be appealed. The heavy penalties represent a significant disciplinary setback for the reigning world champions and could affect Argentina’s squad during upcoming international fixtures.
