FG Unveils N1bn Reform to Transform Agricultural Education, Boost Food Security The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has unveiled a ₦1 billion reform initiative aimed at revitalising agricultural education and strengthening food security, as part of broader efforts to reposition the sector as a key driver of economic growth and national development. The reform programme, anchored by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, is designed to modernise agricultural training institutions, upgrade curricula, and equip a new generation of agro-professionals with practical and technology-driven skills. Officials disclosed that the initiative will focus on rehabilitating agricultural colleges, improving research capacity, and integrating innovation, mechanisation and climate smart practices into teaching and learning processes across institutions nationwide. Speaking on the development, government representatives noted that the reform is a strategic response to Nigeria’s food production challenges, emphasising that building human capacity remains critical to achieving sustainable agricultural transformation.
The programme will also promote stronger linkages between academia, industry and farming communities, ensuring that graduates are not only theoretically grounded but also industry ready and capable of driving productivity across the agricultural value chain. According to the government, part of the ₦1 billion investment will be channelled into training educators, providing modern equipment, supporting agribusiness incubation centres, and facilitating partnerships with private sector stakeholders and development partners. The initiative further aims to encourage youth participation in agriculture, addressing unemployment while fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in areas such as agro-processing, storage, logistics and value addition. Officials stressed that enhancing agricultural education is essential to improving food systems, reducing import dependence, and strengthening national resilience against global supply shocks. The reform aligns with the policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has prioritised food security, economic diversification and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative as a timely intervention, noting that investment in agricultural knowledge systems will play a pivotal role in unlocking Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential and ensuring long-term food sustainability. The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the reform with measurable outcomes, positioning agricultural education as a cornerstone for national prosperity and inclusive growth.
