FG Approves N10bn for TETFund National Research Fund

The Federal Government has approved N10 billion for the 2026 grant cycle of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETFund National Research Fund NRF, representing a 64.2 per cent increase from the N6.09 billion allocated to research projects in 2025. The increased funding is aimed at strengthening research and innovation across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and supporting projects with the potential to contribute to national development. In the 2025 grant cycle, TETFund committed N6.09 billion to 174 approved research projects across various fields.The new N10 billion allocation represents a significant increase in government funding for academic research and is expected to provide researchers with greater resources to undertake studies addressing critical challenges facing the country. The National Research Fund is one of TETFund’s major intervention programmes designed to promote high-quality research in Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The Federal Government has repeatedly identified research, innovation and technology as key drivers of economic transformation and sustainable development. The latest increase in funding is therefore expected to encourage more researchers and institutions to pursue impactful studies capable of producing practical solutions for Nigeria’s economic, social and technological challenges.TETFund is expected to commence the 2026 grant cycle in line with its established guidelines, with eligible researchers and institutions invited to submit proposals for consideration.
