Federal Government Approves Major NYSC Reform to Introduce Skills-Based Model The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC, shifting the 53-year-old programme from its traditional mobilisation structure to a more skills-focused system aimed at addressing Nigeria’s evolving economic and security challenges. The reform is expected to reposition the NYSC beyond its original mandate of promoting national unity through youth deployment, with greater emphasis on equipping corps members with practical skills, entrepreneurship opportunities and career development support. Officials said the changes are designed to make the scheme more relevant to current realities, particularly in the areas of employment creation, innovation and national development. Since its establishment in 1973, the NYSC has played a major role in deploying Nigerian graduates across states for a mandatory service year. However, concerns have grown over the years about the programme’s ability to meet the needs of a changing labour market and the safety challenges faced by corps members in some locations. Under the proposed overhaul, the government plans to strengthen skills acquisition and vocational training components, enabling young Nigerians to gain competencies that can improve their economic prospects after service. The move comes amid broader efforts to tackle youth unemployment and prepare graduates for opportunities in emerging sectors of the economy.

While the reform has been welcomed by some stakeholders as a necessary adjustment, others have called for careful implementation to ensure that the core values of national integration and unity, which have defined the NYSC since its creation, are preserved. The Federal Government said the redesigned scheme would balance national service objectives with the need to produce a more skilled and economically empowered generation of young Nigerians.
