EX MOLDOVA OLIGARCH VLAD PLAHOTNIUC JAILED 19 YEARS OVER ‘THEFT OF THE CENTURY’ BANK FRAUD
EX-MOLDOVA OLIGARCH VLAD PLAHOTNIUC JAILED 19 YEARS OVER ‘THEFT OF THE CENTURY’ BANK FRAUD A Moldovan court has sentenced former oligarch and politician Vlad Plahotniuc to 19 years in prison for his role in a massive banking fraud scandal widely referred to as the country’s “theft of the century.”The ruling marks a major development in one of Eastern Europe’s biggest financial crimes, which saw approximately $1 billion disappear from Moldova’s banking system between 2012 and 2014 an amount equivalent to about one-eighth of the country’s gross domestic product at the time. Prosecutors accused Plahotniuc, once regarded as Moldova’s most powerful and wealthiest figure, of orchestrating a complex scheme involving fraudulent loans, shell companies, and coordinated transfers that drained funds from three major Moldovan banks.
The scandal triggered nationwide protests, political instability, and a severe economic crisis, prompting international investigations and reforms within Moldova’s financial sector. Plahotniuc, who previously held significant influence over Moldovan politics and media, fled the country in 2019 following a change of government and mounting corruption allegations. Authorities pursued legal proceedings in absentia after he failed to return to face trial. Investigators said the fraud relied on coordinated banking operations that allowed large sums to be siphoned out of Moldova and routed through foreign accounts, making recovery of the stolen funds difficult.
The case became symbolic of entrenched corruption in Moldova and intensified public demands for accountability among political and business elites. Moldovan officials have described the sentence as a significant step toward restoring public trust and strengthening the rule of law, though questions remain about whether Plahotniuc will be extradited to serve the prison term. The “theft of the century” scandal continues to shape Moldova’s anti-corruption efforts and relations with international partners seeking transparency and financial reforms.
