Defence Minister Hails Tinubu Over 30–80% Salary Increase for Nigerian Armed Forces Personnel Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa retd., has praised President Bola Tinubu for approving a significant salary increase for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, describing the move as a historic step toward improving the welfare of military personnel. The approved adjustment, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will see members of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force receive salary increases ranging from 30 percent to 80 percent, according to the Defence Ministry. The measure is expected to benefit about 250,000 serving military personnel across the country. General Musa said the decision demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting those responsible for protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and maintaining national security. He noted that improved welfare remains essential to boosting morale, strengthening commitment, and enhancing operational effectiveness among troops. The salary review is part of broader government efforts aimed at addressing long-standing concerns over the welfare of security personnel, including improved remuneration, better working conditions, and support for military families. The Defence Minister expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the increase, saying the development would motivate personnel who continue to confront security challenges across various parts of the country. Nigeria’s armed forces have been involved in multiple operations against terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and other security threats. Military authorities have repeatedly emphasized that welfare improvements are a key component of sustaining effective operations and retaining skilled personnel.
