Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Expands to More US States as Health Officials Investigate Source. A growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the United States has expanded to four additional states, according to health officials, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC continues investigating the spread of the foodborne illness.

The outbreak, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, has now been reported across nine states, with newly affected states including Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. Earlier cases were identified in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. Health authorities have linked the investigation to shredded iceberg lettuce, with officials examining a possible connection to lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at some Taco Bell locations. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials continue to assess additional reports. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness that can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The infection occurs when people consume food or water contaminated with the parasite.

The CDC has reported thousands of confirmed infections since May 2026, with additional suspected cases still under investigation. Health officials say reporting delays and ongoing laboratory testing mean the number of cases could continue to change. A recall and supply-chain review have been carried out as part of efforts to prevent further illnesses. Health agencies are advising consumers to follow food safety guidance and seek medical attention if they experience persistent symptoms associated with the infection.

Officials said the investigation will continue until the source of contamination is fully confirmed and additional steps can be taken to limit the spread of the outbreak.
