Brother Of Michigan Synagogue Assailant Was A Hezbollah Commander, Israeli Military Says
Brother of Michigan synagogue assailant was a Hezbollah commander, Israeli military says The Israeli military has said that the brother of the man who carried out an attack on a synagogue in Michigan was a commander in the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, and was killed in a strike in Lebanon last week.
The attacker, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41‑year‑old naturalised US citizen from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, drove a vehicle laden with commercial fireworks, gasoline and a rifle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township on 12 March 2026. He exchanged fire with a private security guard and died at the scene. Fortunately, no children or staff inside were harmed, though the guard was wounded. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Ghazali’s brother, Ibrahim Mohamad Ghazali, was a Hezbollah commander responsible for managing weapons operations and was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon on 5 March. The strike also reportedly killed several other family members, including Ibrahim’s children and another brother. The Israeli military has linked the weapons unit Ibrahim was part of to attacks on Israel in the wider conflict. Hezbollah, however, has acknowledged the deaths of the family members but has not confirmed Ibrahim’s specific role as a commander within the group. The FBI, which is investigating the Michigan attack, has not publicly confirmed the claim about Ibrahim’s role in Hezbollah or whether it directly motivated Ghazali’s actions. U.S. law enforcement continues to examine the assault, which is being treated as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. Law enforcement sources say more details about the assailant’s background, motives and any possible connections to extremist groups are still under review.
The attack has heightened concerns in the United States about potential lone‑wolf retaliation related to international conflicts, especially as tensions in the Middle East escalate. Lawmakers and community leaders have emphasised the need for vigilance and stronger protections for houses of worship.
The synagogue assault occurred amid a complex geopolitical backdrop including Israel’s wider military campaign in Lebanon and the broader regional conflict making the connection between international militant activity and domestic violence the subject of intense scrutiny.
