Foreman and his wife, Lindsay, were arrested in 2025 while travelling through Iran on a round-the-world motorcycle journey. The couple were later convicted on espionage charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison, a decision the UK government has described as unjustifiable. The family said Foreman was taken to see a judge after being told he was going to meet his lawyer. They claim he was instead informed that his sentence had been increased, without access to legal representation or a translator, and without the chance to challenge the decision. Joe Bennett, Foreman’s stepson and family spokesperson, said the development had caused further distress for the family and raised concerns about the treatment of the couple while detained in Iran. The UK Foreign Office said it was urgently seeking clarification from Iranian authorities over the reported sentence increase. The case has drawn international attention, with concerns previously raised by United Nations experts over the fairness of the couple’s legal proceedings and their detention conditions. Foreman’s family continues to call for his release, maintaining that both he and Lindsay are innocent of the charges against them.
