Abuja, Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday charged the newly sworn-in Chairman and Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to uphold fairness, national unity and stability in the discharge of their duties, calling the commission the “conscience of the nation” and a vital instrument for inclusive development. The event took place at the State House in Abuja where President Tinubu administered the oath of office to Hulayat Ayo Omidiran as FCC Chairperson along with 37 commissioners representing Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Addressing the FCC leadership, Tinubu described the commission as central to promoting equity, fairness and national unity, urging them to carry out their role with diligence, commitment and patriotism. He said they have a critical responsibility to stabilise the country’s complex social and political fabric by ensuring equity in public service appointments and resource allocation.
“What you represent here today is the conscience of our nation… What you have been assigned to do is to promote and stabilise the conscience of this country,” the President said, stressing that the commission’s work must reflect Nigeria’s diversity and uphold fairness Tinubu emphasised that the commission’s constitutional mandate extends beyond bureaucratic duty it is a foundation for fairness and unity across Nigeria’s diverse population. He reminded the FCC leadership to serve with integrity, urging them to reflect on what they can do for the nation, not just what the nation can do for them echoing the famous exhortation of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. He noted that Nigeria has the human and natural resources to be prosperous and encouraged commissioners to see their appointments as an opportunity to contribute to national growth and social cohesion. The Federal Character Commission was established to ensure that socio-economic amenities, public offices and development projects are equitably distributed across Nigeria’s regions and demographic groups. The FCC’s structure includes one commissioner from each state and the FCT, tasked with ensuring fairness in public sector representation and reducing perceptions of marginalisation a core element of Nigeria’s unity and social stability.
