The 29-year-old named Yekini alongside former Arsenal and France star Thierry Henry and former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba as players he looked up to during his formative years. Yekini holds a special place in Nigerian football history. He remains one of the country’s most celebrated strikers and was Nigeria’s first goalscorer at a FIFA World Cup, finding the net against Bulgaria at the 1994 tournament. For Awoniyi, Yekini’s reputation as a powerful and prolific centre-forward made him a natural source of inspiration. His admiration also reflects the influence previous generations of Super Eagles stars have had on Nigerian players who followed them. Awoniyi has since forged his own career in European football.
