Australian Police Release New Photos 25 Years After Murder of British Backpacker Peter Falconio Police in Australia’s Northern Territory have released previously unseen photographs from the investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio, marking the 25th anniversary of one of the country’s most notorious unsolved homicide cases. The newly released images include photographs of the crime scene, the orange Volkswagen Kombi van Falconio and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, were travelling in, as well as injuries sustained by Lees following the attack. Authorities hope the fresh material will generate new leads in the search for Falconio’s remains, which have never been found. Falconio, 28, was shot on the remote Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek in Australia’s Northern Territory on 14 July 2001 after a man flagged down the couple’s vehicle, claiming it had mechanical problems. Lees managed to escape after being bound and forced into the attacker’s vehicle, hiding in nearby bushland until help arrived. In 2005, Bradley John Murdoch was convicted of Falconio’s murder and the assault and attempted kidnapping of Lees. Murdoch died in 2025 without revealing the location of Falconio’s body, leaving the victim’s family without closure.

Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole said the investigation remains active despite the passage of time, stressing that the case will not be closed until Falconio’s remains are located. Authorities are urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. A reward of A$500,000 remains available for information leading to the discovery of Falconio’s remains. Police say advances in forensic technology and renewed public attention could still help solve the remaining mystery surrounding the case.
