ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike at Ambrose Alli University Over Unpaid Allowances The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU Ambrose Alli University AAU, Ekpoma chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and the payment of outstanding allowances. The industrial action began on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the Edo State Government. The union is demanding the full implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement at the institution, as well as payment of allowances accrued from January 2026. The strike has brought academic activities at the university to a halt, affecting teaching and lectures, examinations, supervision of students’ research projects and other statutory academic and administrative duties. The AAU chapter had earlier joined other ASUU branches authorised by the union’s National Executive Council to begin processes for industrial action over the implementation of the 2025 agreement. The 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, unveiled in January 2026, introduced improved remuneration and allowances for academic staff. However, several state-owned universities have complained that their respective state governments have yet to fully implement the provisions. The Benin Zone of ASUU had previously warned that Ambrose Alli University and other state universities in Edo, Delta and Ondo states could face indefinite strikes if the agreement and outstanding allowances were not implemented. The union said it had exhausted its patience after repeated engagements failed to resolve the issues. The latest action is expected to disrupt the academic calendar at AAU, with students potentially facing delays to lectures, examinations, research supervision and other academic activities. ASUU is maintaining its demand for the full implementation of the agreement and settlement of all outstanding allowances before the strike can be resolved.
