Army Chief commissions new accommodation for 6 Division troops, reaffirms commitment to personnel welfare The Chief of Army Staff COAS, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned newly constructed accommodation blocks for personnel of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, reaffirming the military’s commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of its troops. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, the Army Chief said the provision of decent, secure and conducive housing remains a key pillar of the Nigerian Army’s “Soldier First” culture, stressing that the welfare of personnel is fundamental to operational effectiveness and mission success.He noted that soldiers who are well accommodated, motivated and adequately cared for are better positioned to carry out their constitutional responsibilities and respond effectively to evolving security challenges across the country. Lieutenant General Shaibu said the newly commissioned accommodation is part of the Army’s broader strategy to improve the quality of life for officers and soldiers by investing in modern infrastructure and welfare initiatives.

According to him, providing comfortable housing for personnel and their families will not only boost morale but also enhance operational readiness, administrative efficiency and overall professionalism within the Nigerian Army. He reiterated that personnel welfare remains one of the cornerstones of his command philosophy, adding that sustained investment in soldiers is essential to building a resilient and combat-ready force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity. The Army Chief also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Army through the provision of resources aimed at strengthening troop welfare and enhancing operational capacity. He said the Federal Government’s backing has enabled the Army to undertake projects that improve the well-being of personnel while reinforcing its ability to address the country’s security challenges effectively. The commissioning of the accommodation blocks forms part of a series of infrastructure projects being executed across various military formations to improve living standards for serving personnel. The Nigerian Army has, in recent months, commissioned several housing projects in different parts of the country under its welfare programme, reflecting its long-term commitment to ensuring that soldiers have access to safe and comfortable accommodation during and after active service.Military authorities said the latest project underscores the Army’s determination to combine operational excellence with improved personnel welfare, recognising that the effectiveness of the force depends not only on equipment and training but also on the well-being of its troops.
