APC Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Says Subsidy Removal Boosted Revenue The All Progressives Congress APC has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that the removal of petrol subsidy has increased government revenues and helped improve Nigeria’s business environment. The ruling party said the reforms were necessary to address longstanding structural weaknesses in the Nigerian economy and create a more sustainable basis for economic growth. According to the APC, the removal of petrol subsidy has significantly reduced the financial burden on the Federal Government while allowing more resources to accrue to the federation. The party also maintained that the reforms have contributed to improvements in the business environment by reducing distortions associated with the former subsidy regime and encouraging greater private-sector participation. The defence comes amid growing political debate over the impact of Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The African Democratic Congress ADC, an opposition party, has demanded explanations over the management of the additional revenues generated following the subsidy removal, including questions surrounding trillions of naira accruing to government. The APC, however, insisted that the reforms should be assessed based on their long-term impact on Nigeria’s economy rather than short-term difficulties experienced by citizens. The party argued that the government inherited significant economic challenges and that difficult decisions were required to stabilise public finances and create conditions for sustainable investment. As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, the economic reforms are expected to remain a major issue of debate between the APC and opposition parties, with both sides likely to present competing assessments of their impact on Nigerians.
