Angélique Kidjo Makes History With Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

Five-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo has made history as the first African musician and first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Beninese music icon was honoured on Tuesday, August 18, with the 2,854th star in the Recording category at a ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard.

Kidjo, who has enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades, has become one of Africa’s most internationally recognised musicians. Her music blends traditional West African sounds with jazz, Afropop, R&B and other global influences. Born in Benin, Kidjo has released numerous albums and earned five Grammy Awards, including multiple awards in the Global Music category. She has also collaborated with international stars including Burna Boy, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, John Legend and Yo-Yo Ma. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce described the recognition as a celebration of Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence, noting that her achievement opens a significant door for greater recognition of African artists internationally. Beyond music, Kidjo is known for her humanitarian work. Through her Batonga Foundation, she has championed education and opportunities for girls in Africa and has also served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The honour makes Kidjo only the second African-born entertainer to receive a star on the famous boulevard, following South African actress Charlize Theron, who was honoured in 2005. Kidjo’s Hollywood star represents a landmark moment not only in her celebrated career but also in the global recognition of African music and culture.
