African First Ladies’ Forum Recognises Senator Tinubu’s Contributions to Women’s Welfare The Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) has formally recognised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her sustained contributions to the welfare of women and children particularly in girl-child education, maternal health, hygiene and general support for mothers and children across Nigeria and on the African continent. The honour was conferred during the 29th and 30th Ordinary General Assemblies of OAFLAD in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Senator Tinubu was honoured by OAFLAD partners including Auda-NEPAD and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, who commended her role in advancing girl-child education and promoting hygiene initiatives. Though she was unable to attend personally, the award was received on her behalf by Hajiya Nana Shettima, wife of Nigeria’s Vice President.
The recognition also acknowledged her efforts aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality and enhancing welfare support systems for women and children. OAFLAD, operating under its “We Are Equal” campaign, emphasised gender equality, economic empowerment for women, and increased access to education across Africa. The assemblies underscored the need for stronger unity and collaboration among African nations to address pressing gender-specific challenges especially in regions affected by conflict and instability. Speakers at the event, including Dr. Fatima Maada Bio (First Lady of Sierra Leone and Chairperson of OAFLAD) and Lordina Mahama (First Lady of Ghana), praised Senator Tinubu’s advocacy for women and children and her leadership in initiatives promoting sustainable livelihoods and education.
Senator Tinubu’s work reflected in the recognition aligns with her ongoing Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which is closely associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broad These programmes focus on: Empowering women and girls through education, economic support, and access to health services, which complements national development goals.
