ADC, PDP Vow Strong Challenge to APC Ahead of 2027 Elections
Opposition parties, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have pledged to mount a strong challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. The declaration comes amid growing political realignments and renewed optimism within opposition ranks, despite the APC’s dominance across a majority of states in the federation. Leaders of both parties expressed confidence in their ability to rebuild and present a united front, signalling intensified efforts to regain political ground ahead of the next election cycle. Within the PDP, stakeholders at the party’s national convention stressed the need for unity, inclusiveness, and internal reconciliation as a foundation for electoral success. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki noted that the successful conduct of the party’s convention had strengthened its readiness to field candidates in 2027, while party elders called on aggrieved members to return and rebuild the platform. The ADC is also consolidating its position as a coalition platform for opposition forces, with plans to adopt a consensus approach in selecting its presidential candidate. The strategy is seen as part of broader efforts to avoid internal divisions and strengthen the party’s competitiveness against the APC. In a major development, the Kwankwasiyya Movement announced that its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to formally join the ADC. According to the movement, Kwankwaso will register with the party in Kano, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
The announcement has triggered widespread reactions, with supporters directed to join the ADC across wards and states nationwide, signalling a potential expansion of the party’s grassroots base. Kwankwaso’s planned defection follows recent high-level meetings involving key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson.
The engagements, held during the Sallah period, are widely interpreted as efforts to forge a broad opposition alliance capable of challenging the APC in 2027. Analysts suggest that a coalition combining Kwankwaso’s northern support base with other opposition movements could significantly reshape the political contest.
Despite the renewed momentum, concerns remain over
- Internal divisions within opposition parties
- Allegations of external interference
- Organisational and structural weaknesses
Some PDP leaders have accused the ruling party of attempting to undermine opposition strength, warning that such actions could affect democratic competition
With political consultations intensifying, both ADC and PDP are expected to:
- Finalise candidate selection processes
- Strengthen alliances and grassroots mobilisation
- Present a coordinated electoral strategy
The evolving coalition dynamics and potential realignments are likely to play a decisive role in shaping the 2027 general elections.
