A Wave of Violence Erupts Across Mexico After Death of Notorious Cartel Leader A severe wave of violence has broken out across Mexico after Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho”, was killed during a security operation by the Mexican army aimed at capturing him. The unrest has included road blockades, vehicles and buildings set on fire, and clashes between cartel members and security forces in multiple states.
El Mencho was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful and feared drug trafficking organisations, responsible for distributing fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. He was among Mexico and the United States’ most wanted criminals, with a $15 million reward offered by U.S. authorities. Originally a former police officer from Michoacán, he rose through the drug trade to lead CJNG, which became notorious for extreme violence including assassinations, beheadings and widespread territorial control.
On 22 February 2026, Mexican security forces backed by U.S. intelligence support launched a high-profile operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco to capture El Mencho. During the raid, several CJNG members were killed and El Mencho was seriously wounded. He later died while being transported to Mexico City.
Armoured vehicles, rocket launchers and other heavy weaponry were seized in the operation.
Retaliatory violence by cartel members was reported shortly after news of his death spread. Across at least a dozen states, vehicles were torched, roads were blocked with burning blockades, and clashes erupted between armed groups and security forces.
Some regions witnessed suspended flights and public disruption, including in major cities like Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
Local authorities issued alerts urging civilians to stay indoors, and some public transport and schools were suspended amid the unrest. The Mexican Defence Ministry confirmed the operation and casualties, and said soldiers had been attacked during the raid.
The White House acknowledged that U.S. intelligence played a supportive role and called the operation a significant blow to organised crime. Despite praise for the operation, security experts warn that violence may continue as cartel structures adapt to leadership changes. The unrest has sparked travel warnings from foreign governments, including the U.S. and Canada, for states affected by the violence. International concerns have also been raised about public safety in areas preparing to host events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, particularly in cities like Guadalajara.
El Mencho’s death marks one of the most significant developments in Mexico’s drug war in years, following similar operations against cartel leaders like Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Cartel power struggles often lead to episodes of intense violence, as competing factions contest control and retaliate after leadership losses.
