A major security operation in Mexico resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) one of the country’s most notorious criminal organizations.
The raid took place on 22 February 2026 in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
Mexican forces killed El Mencho and several cartel members.
U.S. intelligence agencies provided key support by sharing actionable intelligence that helped locate him part of a broader joint task force effort. Authorities described the operation as a major success in the fight against organized crime but it also triggered a violent backlash across large parts of Mexico.
Violence Spreads Across Multiple States
