EFCC Arrests Nigerian-American Over Alleged $320,000 Vehicle Import Fraud Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Ilorin Zonal Directorate, have arrested a Nigerian-American, Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, over allegations of cross-border vehicle import fraud involving more than $320,000 approximately ₦434.88 million. The arrest was confirmed in a statement published on Thursday, where the anti-graft agency said the suspect is being investigated for alleged criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences. According to preliminary findings by the EFCC, Adams is suspected to be part of a wider syndicate operating between Nigeria and the United States, allegedly involved in defrauding individuals under the guise of purchasing and importing luxury vehicles. Investigators said the suspect allegedly advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG and circulated images of the vehicle to prospective buyers in Nigeria, promising to purchase and ship it from the United States.

Victims reportedly made payments based on these representations, believing the vehicle would be delivered after completion of the transaction. The EFCC disclosed that two victims allegedly transferred a total of $320,000 for the vehicle purchase. One victim, identified as Ikechukwu Osita Ifeabunike, allegedly paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another victim, Godson Azubuike Amans, reportedly paid $175,000 for the same vehicle.

The commission said the funds were paid based on assurances that the vehicle would be imported and delivered, which allegedly never materialised. The anti-graft agency further revealed that preliminary investigations suggest Adams may be linked to a syndicate based in the United States that specializes in similar fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting Nigerians. It also noted that the suspect allegedly has a prior criminal record in the United States involving illegal acquisition of vehicles. The EFCC said Adams was arrested upon his return to Nigeria by operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Directorate following intelligence-led surveillance. The commission stated that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further interrogation, adding that he will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. EFCC reiterated its commitment to combating cross-border financial crimes and warned against fraudulent investment and import schemes targeting Nigerian citizens.
