Two young Palestinian boys were killed by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning while they were collecting firewood to help their families cope with harsh winter conditions, according to their relatives and hospital officials.
The boys were Mohammad and Suleiman Al Zawaraa, cousins who lived in northern Gaza. Mohammad was 14 years old and Suleiman was a year younger, according to reports.
Their bodies were taken to Al Shifa Hospital, where footage showed distraught family members grieving and cradling the children.
Family members said the boys had gone out to collect firewood for cooking and to warm their home in freezing winter conditions, a task many Gazans undertake amid fuel shortages.
Their uncle, Salman Al Zawaraa, told reporters the boys were innocent and far from any frontline, and said they had wanted only to help their parents. The Israeli military acknowledged the incident but claimed its troops had been responding to people it described as “terrorists who crossed the Yellow Line, planted explosives and posed a threat.” The military also disputed that the victims were children, without providing clear evidence. Relatives strongly reject the military’s account, saying the boys were not near the so-called Yellow Line and were not involved in any hostile activity. The “Yellow Line” refers to a not-clearly-marked boundary inside Gaza which Israeli forces consider a security zone; its exact limits are disputed and often not visible on the ground.
Gaza has been experiencing severe fuel shortages, power outages, destroyed infrastructure and extreme cold, forcing many residents especially children to search for wood or other fuels for heat and cooking. A separate report shows that some children have died or been wounded from exposure to cold and lack of basic resources in recent months. This tragic killing comes amid ongoing tensions in Gaza, where ceasefire agreements have repeatedly broken down or been violated, and where Israeli fire has killed other civilians including children in recent weeks and months. Health officials have reported numerous fatalities resulting from military operations and clashes in the enclave. Family members described the boys as “full of life and joy”, doing simple chores to support their households. Their deaths have sparked grief among relatives and residents, highlighting the acute humanitarian plight in the territory.
