The Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC has confirmed that its nationwide primaries for the 2027 general elections will hold today as scheduled, despite growing political tensions and logistical concerns ahead of the exercise. In a statement issued by the party leadership, the NDC announced that only aspirants who emerge victorious in the primaries will be required to pay nomination fees afterward, a move the party said was designed to ease financial pressure on contestants and encourage wider participation. The party said the primaries would cover presidential, governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly positions across the country, following its approved electoral timetable. According to the NDC, all aspirants who purchased expression of interest forms have been cleared to participate in the process. National leader of the party, Seriake Dickson, said the decision was reached after consultations involving the party’s National Working Committee, screening panels and senior stakeholders, including presidential aspirant Peter Obi. The party explained that the unusually high number of aspirants and limited preparation time influenced the adjustment to its nomination fee process. The NDC also disclosed that teams of senior party officials had already been deployed nationwide to supervise the primaries, while an appeal panel would handle disputes arising from the exercise. The party warned against violence, intimidation and any unauthorised interference during the voting process. According to the timetable released by the party, presidential affirmation exercises will be conducted alongside primaries for the Senate, House of Representatives, governorship and State Assembly positions at designated venues nationwide. The development comes amid intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several prominent politicians recently joining the NDC and seeking elective positions under the party’s platform.
