The world-renowned Louvre Museum in Paris has been temporarily shut down following a daring early-morning robbery, French authorities have confirmed.
According to reports from local media, three masked men gained unauthorized entry into the museum and used a goods lift to reach the historic Apollo Gallery, home to some of the Louvre’s most precious artefacts and royal jewellery pieces.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the intruders were armed with small chainsaws, which they allegedly used to cut through display casings. The suspects made a swift escape on a scooter, carrying away nine valuable items of jewellery before security could intervene.
France’s Culture Minister, Rachida Dati, confirmed the incident and stated that no injuries were reported, but a full-scale investigation is now underway. Police forensic teams have cordoned off the area as detectives work to gather CCTV footage and witness statements.
The Louvre Museum, which houses global treasures including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, announced on its official social media handles that it would remain closed for the rest of the day due to “exceptional reasons.”
The robbery has sparked renewed concern about security vulnerabilities in major cultural institutions across Europe, especially amid rising organized theft attempts targeting museums and private art collections.
Authorities have assured the public that enhanced security protocols are being reviewed to prevent future occurrences.
As of press time, no group has claimed responsibility, and the value of the stolen items has not yet been officially disclosed.
