Gambari Warns Nigeria Already Behind Schedule For Credible 2027 Elections
Gambari warns Nigeria already behind schedule for credible 2027 elections Abuja, Nigeria Former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, has warned that Nigeria is already falling behind schedule in preparations for credible 2027 general elections, citing weak political parties, poor leadership culture and fragile democratic institutions as major threats.
Speaking at a public forum on democratic governance, Gambari said Nigeria’s democratic consolidation remains at risk unless urgent reforms are implemented well ahead of the next election cycle.
Gambari stressed that credible elections require early planning, strong institutions and disciplined political parties, warning that delays and internal party failures could undermine public trust.
“We are already behind schedule for credible elections in 2027. Political parties are weak, leadership recruitment is flawed, and institutions meant to safeguard democracy are under pressure,” he said.
The former diplomat criticised political parties for lacking ideology, internal democracy and policy direction.
He warned that excessive godfatherism and elite capture weaken accountability and discourage competent leadership.
According to him, parties should be the foundation of democratic consolidation, not vehicles for personal ambition.
Gambari noted that Nigeria continues to struggle with:
Erosion of public confidence in electoral processes
Poor political leadership recruitment
Weak enforcement of electoral laws
He urged political leaders to prioritise national interest over personal gain, warning that democracy cannot survive without responsible leadership and respect for institutions.
The former UN official called on:
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intensify early preparations Political parties to undertake serious internal reforms Civil society and citizens to remain vigilant in defending democratic norms Gambari concluded that while Nigeria’s democracy has endured, its future depends on decisive action now, not in the heat of the 2027 election season.
