Iraq Confirms Full US Military Withdrawal From Federal Territory
Iraq has confirmed that United States forces have completed a full withdrawal from all military bases within the country’s federal territory, formally ending a decades-long American military presence in much of the country.In a statement, Iraqi officials said the withdrawal applies strictly to federal Iraq, noting that US troops will remain stationed in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region as part of ongoing security and advisory cooperation.The move marks a significant milestone in Iraq’s efforts to assert greater sovereignty over its security affairs, following years of political pressure from lawmakers and armed factions demanding the departure of foreign forces. US troops had been deployed across federal Iraq primarily to assist in counterterrorism operations and to support Iraqi security forces in the fight against extremist groups. Iraqi authorities said all vacated bases have now been fully handed over to national forces.
Officials stressed that while the military withdrawal has been completed, diplomatic, training, and intelligence cooperation between Baghdad and Washington will continue.
