British Teenager Dies During Gap Year In Vietnam; Family Donate Her Organs A 19‑year‑old British student, Orla Wates, tragically died in a motorbike accident while travelling in Southeast Asia during her gap year, local and international reports confirm. Orla described by her parents as “beautiful, independent and very funny” was riding on the back of a motorcycle along the Ha Giang Loop, a scenic and popular tourist route in northern Vietnam, when the driver reportedly lost control. She was taken to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi after the crash on 2 April, but succumbed to her injuries with her parents by her side.
Her grieving parents, Andrew and Henrietta Wates, paid tribute to their daughter’s vibrant personality and zest for life. They said she “loved to look good and lived life to the full”, adding that her sharp wit and independent spirit made her beloved by family and friends alike. Orla had been travelling through Southeast Asia before beginning a university degree later this year. She was scheduled to start her studies at Durham University in the United Kingdom.
In a deeply compassionate decision amid their grief, Orla’s family chose to donate her organs, resulting in transplants that saved multiple critically ill patients in Vietnam. Hospital officials confirmed that her liver, kidneys and corneas were used to give others a second chance at life. A representative from the hospital praised the family’s decision, saying it “transcended nationality and race” and brought hope to those suffering from organ failure. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said its consular staff were assisting Orla’s family during the difficult time, offering support and coordinating with local authorities. Officials expressed condolences to family and friends. Orla’s father highlighted her love for Vietnam and said giving back to the country she cherished was important to the family. The Ha Giang Loop a roughly 350‑kilometre mountain motorbike route is a popular but challenging route for tourists and adventure travellers. Riders often travel in groups with local guides, but road conditions and traffic risks have led to accidents in the past. Officials continue to investigate the exact circumstances of the crash.
