NASA Prepares Historic Crewed Mission Around the Moon After 50 Years NASA is building up to the launch of its first crewed mission around the Moon in more than five decades, marking a historic return to deep space exploration under the Artemis program. The mission, known as Artemis II, is scheduled to lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying four astronauts on a journey that will take humans farther from Earth than at any time since the Apollo era. Artemis II will be the first time humans travel beyond low Earth orbit since 1972, when the final Apollo mission ended. The 10-day flight will see astronauts loop around the Moon before returning safely to Earth.

Unlike the Apollo landings, Artemis II is a lunar flyby mission and will not land on the Moon. Instead, its goals include:
- Testing life-support systems aboard the Orion spacecraft
- Evaluating navigation and communication in deep space
- Paving the way for future Moon landings
The spacecraft will travel over 250,000 miles from Earth, surpassing previous crewed flight distances. Artemis II is a crucial step in NASA’s long-term ambition to:
- Return humans to the Moon
- Establish a sustainable lunar presence
- Eventually send astronauts to Mars
Future missions, including Artemis III and beyond, are expected to attempt human landings near the Moon’s south pole later this decade The launch has drawn global attention, with hundreds of thousands of spectators expected along Florida’s coast and millions more watching worldwide via live broadcasts.
