The theft occurred on the night of March 22–23 at the Magnani Rocca Foundation, a private museum located near the city of Parma. According to Italian police, four masked men forced their way into the museum and quickly removed three valuable paintings before fleeing the scene. The stolen works include Les Poissons by Renoir, Still Life with Cherries by Cézanne, and Odalisque on the Terrace by Matiss masterpieces collectively valued at millions of euros. Authorities said the operation was highly coordinated, with the thieves completing the robbery in under three minutes, likely prompted by the activation of the museum’s alarm system.
Security footage reportedly shows the suspects breaking into the building, entering a gallery, and escaping through the surrounding gardens before police could respond. Italy’s Carabinieri police, along with the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, have launched an investigation and are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the suspects. Experts believe the heist may have been carried out by an organized criminal group that had prior knowledge of the museum’s layout and security systems. The Magnani-Rocca Foundation houses an important private collection established by art collector Luigi Magnani, featuring works by masters such as Monet, Goya, and Rubens. Art recovery specialists have warned that such high-profile works are difficult to sell on the open market and may instead be used as bargaining tools or held in private collections. Police say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to track down the stolen masterpieces, in what has been described as one of the most audacious art thefts in Italy in recent years.
