The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of a nationwide alphanumeric digital postcode system, a major step in modernising the country’s national addressing infrastructure and boosting efficiency in mail delivery, logistics, emergency response and digital services.

The approval was disclosed by Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, following a council meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen foundational systems under the hashtags

The new system, described as GIS‑enabled and alphanumeric, will replace Nigeria’s traditional numeric postcode structure with a geospatially intelligent framework that assigns a unique code to every location based on geographic coordinates. Officials say this will greatly enhance precision in addressing across urban and rural areas alike. Tijani said the reform, developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) under Postmaster‑General Tola Odeyemi, is aimed at improving the accuracy, speed and reliability of mail and parcel processing nationwide. Government officials highlighted that the digital postcode system will serve as a key enabler of national development, extending beyond postal operations to support logistics, e‑commerce, emergency response, urban planning and the delivery of public services. By embedding geographic intelligence into address identification, authorities expect the system to reduce failed deliveries, shorten turnaround times, and improve last‑mile connectivity a persistent issue in Nigeria’s expanding online retail and digital economy. The rollout of the digital postcode framework is also expected to assist national planning and improve data integration across multiple government sectors, including health, security, taxation and infrastructure development. Officials say improved address data will help drive better decision‑making and resource allocation. Nigeria’s outdated addressing system, which has often lacked clearly defined street names or house numbers, has been a hurdle for postal and logistics firms, emergency services and residents. The digital system is designed to overcome these challenges by offering standardized and machine‑readable codes tied to precise locations. Tijani described the approval as another milestone in building critical infrastructure for a modern, inclusive and globally competitive digital economy under President Tinubu’s administration. Authorities say implementation will proceed in phases with public awareness and stakeholder engagement campaigns to ensure broad adoption by citizens, businesses and government agencies.
