Ebola UN Expresses Confidence in Nigeria’s Containment Efforts

The United Nations has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to contain the newly confirmed case of Ebola virus disease, assuring the Federal Government of its readiness to provide support to prevent further transmission. The UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, gave the assurance on Wednesday while responding to questions from the News Agency of Nigeria at the organisation’s headquarters in New York. Dujarric said the confirmation of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Nigeria was concerning, particularly as the outbreak had spread beyond countries previously affected. However, he commended Nigerian health authorities for their response and ongoing contact-tracing efforts. “We have full confidence in the ability and the capacity of the Nigerian Government’s health authorities to deal with this single case,” he said. He stressed the importance of international cooperation and compliance with global health regulations to prevent the virus from spreading across borders. The UN spokesperson reaffirmed the organisation’s readiness to assist Nigeria in managing the public health threat, noting that the World Health Organisation was working closely with national authorities. “We are, as always, ready to assist the Government of Nigeria in any way possible,” Dujarric said.He added that the WHO was maintaining contact with health officials in Nigeria to coordinate the response and support containment measures. The UN called on countries to work together, strengthen surveillance and follow international health regulations as the regional outbreak continues to evolve. Nigeria confirmed its first imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease on October 20, 2026, involving a woman with a recent travel history to Uganda.According to the WHO, the patient developed symptoms on October 7, sought medical attention at a private health facility in Abuja on October 11 and subsequently tested positive for the virus on October 20. The patient was placed in isolation and is receiving medical care, while health authorities have identified 44 contacts for monitoring and further investigation. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has activated its incident management system to coordinate surveillance, contact tracing, infection prevention and other response measures. The WHO and its partners are also supporting Nigerian authorities with case investigations, infection-control measures and essential supplies, including personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. Nigeria is the fifth country to report a case of the virus during the current outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2026. The WHO has urged countries across the region to maintain strong disease surveillance, strengthen laboratory capacity and ensure rapid-response teams are prepared to investigate suspected cases. The agency has also advised countries to reinforce infection prevention and control in healthcare facilities and maintain heightened monitoring at points of entry. Despite the concerns, the UN expressed confidence that cooperation between Nigeria’s health authorities and international partners would help contain the case and reduce the risk of further transmission.
