FG Explores Global Partnerships to Boost Agricultural Financing

The Federal Government is exploring partnerships with international development institutions and other global stakeholders to strengthen agricultural financing and improve access to funding for farmers and agribusinesses across Nigeria. The initiative is aimed at mobilising additional financial resources to support agricultural production, improve productivity and strengthen the country’s food security. Access to affordable financing remains a major challenge for many Nigerian farmers, particularly smallholder producers who often struggle to obtain loans due to limited collateral, high borrowing costs and perceived risks associated with agricultural activities. Through international partnerships, the government is seeking opportunities to expand funding options, attract investment and support programmes that can improve access to credit across the agricultural value chain. Agricultural financing is essential for farmers to acquire improved seeds, fertilisers, machinery and other inputs required to increase production. It can also help agribusinesses invest in processing, storage, transportation and distribution facilities, reducing post-harvest losses and improving market access. Stronger collaboration with international partners could also facilitate the introduction of innovative financing mechanisms, technical assistance and risk-sharing arrangements designed to encourage greater participation by commercial lenders and private investors. The government’s efforts come amid the need to strengthen domestic food production, improve the resilience of agricultural businesses and reduce the country’s vulnerability to disruptions in food supply. Smallholder farmers, who account for a significant share of agricultural production in Nigeria, stand to benefit from financing arrangements that offer accessible credit, manageable repayment terms and support tailored to seasonal farming activities. However, the effectiveness of the proposed partnerships will depend on their implementation, the terms of financing and the extent to which available resources reach farmers and agricultural enterprises. The initiative highlights the importance of sustained investment and international cooperation in building a more productive, competitive and financially inclusive agricultural sector.
