President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice-President Kashim Shettima to lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Kano State following a devastating fire disaster at Singer Market, one of Nigeria’s largest food commodity hubs. The delegation will convey the President’s condolences to victims, pledge federal support and financial aid, and assist in efforts to reopen the market quickly after widespread losses. A fire broke out at Singer Market on Saturday evening, continuing into Sunday and destroying significant parts of the market. The incident reportedly marked the second major fire at the same market in less than two weeks, compounding economic losses for traders. Preliminary reports suggest billions of naira’s worth of goods were lost, with multiple shops, stalls and merchandise wiped out in the blaze.
President Tinubu personally spoke by phone with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to express sympathy and obtain a situation report. On his directive, Vice-President Shettima will lead the delegation set to depart Abuja on Monday to sympathise with affected traders and residents of Kano State. The FG team will convey the President’s condolences, pledge financial assistance on behalf of the federal government, and extend support to the Kano State Government in reopening and rebuilding the market.
