NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Suspected Counterfeit ORACARE Toothpaste The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC has warned Nigerians against the circulation of suspected counterfeit ORACIRE Toothpaste, allegedly being distributed under the guise of the registered ORACARE Toothpaste. The agency issued the alert after surveillance activities at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos, where officials detected a product that closely resembles the registered toothpaste in its packaging and overall appearance. According to NAFDAC, the suspected counterfeit product may be difficult for consumers to distinguish from the genuine product because of the similarities in its packaging and presentation. The agency said the origin, composition, safety and quality of the suspected counterfeit product have not been verified. NAFDAC warned that counterfeit personal-care products may not comply with established safety and quality standards and could therefore pose potential risks to consumers. The agency said the alert followed a formal complaint and market intelligence concerning the distribution of the suspected counterfeit product. NAFDAC has commenced surveillance and directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to investigate the availability and distribution of the product and take appropriate regulatory action. The agency is also working to determine the extent of the suspected product’s circulation and identify those involved in its distribution. NAFDAC urged consumers to exercise caution when purchasing toothpaste and other personal-care products, particularly where there are concerns about authenticity. Healthcare providers and members of the public were also encouraged to report suspected sales or distribution of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office. The agency said information from consumers and healthcare professionals could assist its efforts to trace and remove the suspected counterfeit product from circulation. The warning underscores the importance of purchasing regulated consumer products from trusted sources and checking product details carefully before use.
