NLC, Opposition Mount Pressure as Petrol Price Hits ₦1,470

The Federal Government is facing renewed pressure over rising petrol prices as opposition politicians warn of further increases under current policies, while the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC is demanding measures to protect households from the impact of higher fuel costs. Petrol prices have climbed to about ₦1,470 per litre in parts of Nigeria, intensifying concerns over the effect of rising transport and energy costs on household finances and businesses. The African Democratic Congress ADC has criticised the government’s economic policies over the latest increase, warning that continued petrol price rises could further strain Nigerians already facing high living costs. The NLC has also called for urgent intervention, arguing that workers and households need buffers to cushion the consequences of fuel-price increases. Labour’s concerns centre on the wider inflationary effects of petrol prices, particularly through transportation, food distribution, production and other operating costs. The union has previously opposed fuel-price increases and pushed for measures aimed at reducing the burden of deregulation on workers and consumers. The latest increase has renewed debate over Nigeria’s petroleum pricing system following the Federal Government’s decision to remove petrol subsidies in 2023. The government has maintained that market-based pricing is necessary to reduce the financial burden of subsidising petrol, while critics have continued to call for measures to protect vulnerable Nigerians from the resulting price pressures. With petrol now selling at significantly higher prices in some locations, opposition parties and labour organisations are pressing the government for immediate relief measures. The debate reflects the continuing tension between the government’s deregulation policy and demands for stronger social protection as Nigerians contend with higher transportation and living costs.
