FG Releases Eight-Month CATA to Tertiary Institutions
The Federal Government has released funds for the full payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance CATA to eligible academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for the period covering January to August 2026. The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, shortly after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation. According to the minister, all affected federal tertiary institutions should have received notification to commence payment to eligible academic staff. The latest release follows an earlier five-month CATA payment announced in June 2026. The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance is intended to help lecturers meet expenses associated with their academic and professional responsibilities.

- The allowance was reviewed under the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and forms part of the revised remuneration package for university lecturers. The Education Minister also disclosed that arrangements were being made for the corresponding allowance for non-academic staff. He said funding for the payment was expected to become available within the coming weeks. Alausa described the release as another indication of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic and non-academic staff across Nigeria’s tertiary education system. The minister said the administration’s education reforms extend beyond staff welfare, noting that investments are also being made in infrastructure across tertiary institutions as well as in basic and postgraduate education. The government said it remains committed to implementing approved agreements and improving the quality of education in Nigeria. The Federal Government’s latest CATA release is expected to provide relief to academic staff who had been awaiting payment of the allowance for the first eight months of 2026.
