Nigeria Strengthens Partnership With Italy to Support Vulnerable Nigerians Nigeria is deepening its partnership with Italy as both countries explore stronger cooperation aimed at improving livelihoods, empowering vulnerable communities and expanding opportunities for women, families and young Nigerians.

The renewed cooperation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Italy, with discussions spanning social development, economic cooperation, education, migration and investment. One notable area of collaboration is the proposed establishment of care centres across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The initiative involves the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Italian partners, with the centres designed to promote women’s socio economic empowerment, strengthen livelihoods and support families and communities. The partnership is expected to focus on creating sustainable opportunities rather than relying solely on short-term assistance. By linking vulnerable Nigerians with economic and social support programmes, the initiative seeks to help individuals and families build greater resilience and improve their living conditions. Nigeria and Italy have also been working together on education and youth development. In May, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Italy’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, discussed cooperation around the Global Partnership for Education and efforts to mobilise international financing for education. The education partnership is particularly significant given Nigeria’s large young population. Nigerian officials have said that better access to education, skills and employment opportunities can help address youth unemployment while also reducing pressures that contribute to irregular migration. Italy has also expressed interest in expanding economic cooperation with Nigeria, including investment in areas such as infrastructure, energy and construction. Italian companies have had a longstanding presence in Nigeria, while both governments have indicated an interest in creating conditions for deeper investment and economic ties. The strengthened relationship comes as the Nigerian government continues to expand its social protection and poverty reduction programmes. The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has been pursuing partnerships designed to connect vulnerable households with productive opportunities, financing, agricultural inputs and sustainable livelihoods. In August, the Federal Government and the Bank of Agriculture formalised a partnership aimed at connecting verified vulnerable Nigerians with agricultural financing, productive assets and livelihood opportunities. The initiative is intended to help households transition from receiving assistance to developing income-generating capacity. For Nigeria, cooperation with international partners such as Italy provides an opportunity to mobilise additional resources, expertise and investment for programmes targeting vulnerable communities. The partnership also reflects a broader diplomatic effort to strengthen Nigeria’s relationship with Italy beyond traditional areas of cooperation, while addressing shared interests in migration, economic development, education, social protection and sustainable growth. As discussions continue, the focus will be on translating bilateral commitments into practical programmes that deliver measurable benefits to vulnerable Nigerians and create sustainable opportunities for families and communities.
