FG Moves to Unlock $25m CVFF Financing for Nigerian Shipowners
The Federal Government is taking steps to unlock about $25 million from the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund CVFF to support Nigerian shipowners and strengthen the country’s maritime industry. The move is part of efforts to improve access to financing for indigenous operators and increase the capacity of Nigerian-owned vessels to participate more effectively in the maritime sector. The CVFF was established to provide financial support to indigenous shipping operators, particularly in the acquisition, construction and maintenance of vessels. Access to the fund has remained a major issue for stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime industry, with shipowners repeatedly calling for the disbursement of the resources to boost local participation and reduce dependence on foreign operators. The Federal Government’s latest move is expected to provide much-needed financing for qualified Nigerian shipowners while supporting the development of local shipping capacity. Industry stakeholders believe that effective utilisation of the CVFF could contribute to job creation, fleet expansion and increased Nigerian participation in the country’s maritime economy. The initiative also forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the maritime sector and maximise the economic opportunities available within Nigeria’s vast coastal and inland waterways.
