Dangote Refinery’s ₦2.15tn IPO Targets 10 Million Retail Investors
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is targeting as many as 10 million retail investors through its proposed ₦2.15 trillion Initial Public Offering IPO, a scale advisers say could dramatically reshape retail participation in Nigeria’s capital market. The proposed offering is expected to give millions of Nigerians an opportunity to invest in one of the country’s biggest industrial projects, as the Dangote Group moves towards broader public ownership of its refinery business. Transaction advisers to the IPO said the target of 10 million retail investors would be about 20 times the current record for retail participation in Nigeria’s capital market. The ambitious target highlights the scale of the proposed transaction and the growing push to deepen participation by individual investors in the Nigerian capital market. If achieved, the offering could significantly expand the number of Nigerians directly invested in a major domestic energy company while potentially creating a new benchmark for retail participation in future Nigerian IPOs. The ₦2.15 trillion valuation attached to the proposed IPO also makes it one of the most significant potential capital-market transactions in Nigeria, with investors expected to closely monitor the offer as details emerge. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, located in Lagos, is one of Africa’s largest oil refineries and has become a major component of Nigeria’s efforts to increase domestic petroleum refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported refined products. The planned IPO is therefore expected to attract considerable interest from both institutional and individual investors as the company moves towards the next phase of its ownership structure. The success of the retail component will depend on investor appetite, the final terms of the offer and the ability of market operators to effectively reach and onboard millions of prospective investors.
