Trump Suggests Renaming New Mexico ‘New America’
US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the state of New Mexico “New America”, extending his recent push to rename prominent geographical locations. Trump made the proposal on Sunday, drawing an immediate rejection from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who dismissed the idea. The suggestion comes just days after Trump signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid an escalating trade dispute with neighbouring Canada. Canada has also rejected the proposed renaming of Lake Ontario, maintaining that the lake’s established name should remain unchanged. Trump’s latest proposal has generated further debate over his administration’s approach to geographical names and efforts to promote what he describes as a stronger American identity. New Mexico has been known by its current name since it became a US state in 1912, while the name itself reflects the region’s long historical ties to Mexico and Spanish colonial history. The governor’s rejection means the proposal is unlikely to result in any immediate official change, as changing the name of a US state would require significant legal and political processes. Trump’s comments have nevertheless added New Mexico to a growing list of geographical locations whose names have become subjects of political controversy during his presidency.
